Your Questions, Answered

  • AMP specializes in mood disorders including depression, bipolar disorder, and Treatment-Resistant Depression (TRD), and also supports individuals living with anxiety disorders and ADHD.

Treatment-Resistant Depression refers to depression that has not meaningfully improved after two or more antidepressant medications at adequate doses and duration. For those who have not found lasting relief through conventional treatments, we offer advanced, evidence-based options — including ketamine therapy — as part of a carefully individualized care plan.

  • Ketamine is a fast-acting, evidence-based treatment that can help reduce symptoms of depression and bipolar depression — particularly for individuals who have not responded to standard therapies.

At AMP, ketamine is administered under direct medical supervision in a safe, monitored clinical setting. Depending on what is clinically appropriate for you, it may be provided as an intramuscular injection, sublingual lozenge, or nasal spray. The method is always determined by your treating psychiatrist based on your individual profile and treatment history.

  • Ketamine is not appropriate for everyone, which is why we begin with a thorough psychiatric and medical assessment.

Your first appointment with our psychiatrist will include a detailed review of your mental health history, current symptoms, previous treatments, and relevant medical background. Based on this, we will work with you to determine whether ketamine therapy is clinically appropriate and safe for your situation. No treatment decisions are made without this evaluation.

  • Yes. When administered in a properly equipped clinical setting under physician supervision, ketamine is considered safe and is generally well tolerated.

Every session at AMP is closely monitored by our medical team to support both your safety and your comfort throughout the process. As with any medical treatment, individual responses vary, which is why ongoing monitoring and open communication with your care team are built into every stage of your program.

  • In addition to psychiatric consultation and ketamine treatment, AMP offers a broader range of services designed to support whole-person wellness:

    • Individual and group psychotherapy

    • ADHD assessment and coaching

    • Weight management support

These services can be integrated into a unified care plan, allowing us to address the mental, emotional, and physical dimensions of your health in a coordinated, personalized way.

  • It depends on the service.

A physician referral is required for psychiatric consultation and ketamine assessment. If you do not yet have a referring provider, we recommend speaking with your family doctor as a first step.

For psychotherapy, ADHD coaching, and weight management services, no referral is needed — you are welcome to contact us directly to get started. Referrals are always welcome but not required for these services.

  • Your first visit is focused entirely on understanding you.

It begins with a comprehensive psychiatric assessment — a dedicated conversation with your psychiatrist covering your mental health history, current symptoms, lived experience, and treatment goals. There is no rush and no assumptions. From there, we work collaboratively to develop a personalized care plan, which may include medication management, psychotherapy, or advanced interventions such as ketamine therapy, depending on what is most appropriate for your situation.

  • Treatment timelines vary from person to person, and we are transparent about that from the start.

Some individuals notice meaningful improvements in mood or energy within the first few ketamine sessions. Others require a longer course of treatment before sustained benefit is established. There is no single timeline that applies to everyone. What we can commit to is close monitoring of your progress throughout and a willingness to adjust your plan if needed — because getting you the right outcome matters more than following a fixed protocol.

  • AMP may be the right fit for adults between the ages of 18 and 65 who are living with mood disorders that have not responded adequately to standard treatment. This includes individuals with difficult-to-treat depression — typically defined as an insufficient response to at least two antidepressant medications from different drug classes at appropriate doses — as well as difficult-to-treat bipolar depression, and co-occurring ADHD or anxiety disorders.

For ketamine therapy specifically, eligibility is more defined. Candidates are generally between the ages of 25 and 65 and have a diagnosis of Treatment-Resistant Depression or difficult-to-treat bipolar depression, with documented trials of two to four antidepressants across at least two drug classes, and one to two augmentation strategies as per CANMAT guidelines. Additional medical requirements — including cardiovascular, hepatic, and renal stability, well-controlled blood pressure, and the capacity to provide informed consent — are assessed during your initial consultation.

If you are unsure whether you meet these criteria, the most appropriate next step is to speak with your referring physician or contact our clinic directly.

  • AMP's services — and ketamine therapy in particular — are not appropriate for everyone. For safety reasons, individuals with the following presentations are generally not candidates for our programs:

    • Current acute mania or psychosis

    • A history of psychotic disorders

    • Current acute suicidality

    • A current or past history of aggression

    • Cluster B personality disorders, including borderline personality disorder

    • Dissociative disorders

    • Active or past substance use disorders

    • Unstable medical conditions, such as recent cardiovascular events, uncontrolled hypertension or diabetes, or renal or hepatic impairment

Every patient is carefully assessed before any treatment begins. These criteria are not intended to be dismissive — they reflect our commitment to clinical safety and responsible care. If you have questions about whether AMP is right for you, we encourage you to speak with your referring physician or reach out to us directly.
